Privacy Policy
Short version: we don't collect your data. Tare is a local-first app. Your nutrition information stays on your device and, if you choose, in your iCloud account.
What we collect
Nothing.
Tare has no user accounts, no analytics, no tracking pixels, no crash reporting SDKs, and no advertising frameworks. We don't know who you are, what you eat, or how often you use the app.
Your rights under GDPR, CCPA, and similar laws
Because Tare collects no personal data, there's nothing for us to access, export, correct, or delete. Your data exists only on your devices and in your own iCloud account. If you want to remove it, delete the app from each device and remove its data from iCloud in iOS Settings → [Your Name] → iCloud → Manage Storage.
iCloud sync
If you have iCloud enabled for Tare, your data syncs across your Apple devices via Apple's CloudKit. This data goes to your iCloud account — we have no access to it.
You can disable iCloud sync for Tare at any time in your device settings. Your data will remain on the device where it was created.
Apple's iCloud privacy policy applies to data stored in your iCloud account.
Apple Health
Tare can optionally read calories, protein, carbohydrates, fat, fiber, water, weight, and body-composition values from Apple Health, and write the supported values you record in Tare. Each type requires your explicit permission.
Nutrition and water values read from Health are copied into Tare's local database so they can appear in your log, reports, exports, and widgets. If iCloud is enabled for Tare, that copy can also sync through Apple's CloudKit into your private iCloud account. Tare's developer does not receive or have access to these values.
The latest calorie and macro summary can be sent from your iPhone to your Apple Watch using Apple's WatchConnectivity framework. The snapshot remains in Tare's local app storage on your devices and is not sent to us.
You can revoke Health access at any time in Settings → Health → Data Access & Devices → Tare.
App languages
Tare v1.13 and later are available in English, Russian, Ukrainian, and Polish. The app opens in your iPhone's language, and you can choose a different one in Profile → Language & Region.
This has no data implications. Every translation of Tare's own interface ships inside the app, built in before it reaches the App Store. Choosing a language does not contact any server, and no translation service is involved in showing you the app. Your choice is stored on your device and never leaves it — we don't know which language you read Tare in, any more than we know anything else about you. (Food search can translate product names on your device; see Food search below.)
Crash reports
If you opt in to share diagnostics with Apple in iOS Settings, Apple may forward anonymised crash reports to us through App Store Connect. These contain technical information like stack traces and device model — never your nutrition data, name, or anything that identifies you.
Analytics
None. We don't use any analytics services. No Google Analytics, no Mixpanel, no Firebase, no App Store analytics beyond what Apple provides by default (which is anonymized and not tied to individuals).
Third-party services
Tare connects to two external APIs for food data:
USDA FoodData Central
When you search for a food, Tare sends the search term to the USDA API. If you typed it in Russian, Ukrainian or Polish, it may first be translated into English on your iPhone using Apple's built-in on-device translation, which never sends your text to a translation server. Tare only uses translation models already on your device and never asks you to download one. Product names in your results are translated back the same way, on your device. No personal information is included — just the food name, as you typed it or as translated on your device. Requests identify the app and its version, nothing about you.
Open Food Facts
When you search for a food, Tare sends the search term to Open Food Facts; when you scan a barcode or open a result, it sends that product code. Only the search term or the product code is sent — no personal data, no device info, no location, and no account. Requests identify the app and its version so Open Food Facts can contact us, nothing about you.
Both services are queried when you search, scan, or open a result, and once in the background to complete nutrient details for foods you have already saved. Results are cached locally to minimize network requests.
