About Tare
Tare is a nutrition tracker for iPhone and iPad, built and maintained by one independent developer. No investors, no growth team, no data business — an app funded by its $6.99 price and nothing else.
Why it exists
Tare started as the app its developer wanted and could not find: a tracker that treated a food log as private by default, charged money instead of harvesting attention, and answered the one question formulas can't — what do you actually burn? Every design decision on this site follows from those three.
What "no data business" means in practice
There is no Tare server. Not "we don't sell your data" — there is no place your data could be sold from. The app has no accounts, no analytics SDKs, and no telemetry; sync runs through your personal iCloud, where we have no access. The privacy policy is short because there is very little to disclose.
This shapes engineering, not just marketing. An app with no telemetry cannot watch how features behave in the field, so Tare's features are built to detect their own bad inputs and degrade safely on the device — a smart scale reporting impossible body-composition swings is caught by plausibility limits, not by a dashboard someone watches. The constraint became a design discipline.
Why one platform
Tare is native SwiftUI, deeply tied to iOS — SwiftData, CloudKit, WidgetKit, Live Activities, Apple Health. Going native is what lets one person maintain the whole app at quality, and it is why there is no Android or web version planned. Your data exports to CSV at any time, so the commitment is never a lock-in.
The name
tare /tɛr/ — to zero a scale before weighing, so you measure the thing itself and not the container. That is the design goal: strip the noise, measure what matters.
